Maritime Rowing Club’s Youth Learn to Row and Development Programs draw elementary, middle school and high school aged rowers from all over Fairfield County.
Development 1 is a NEW introductory program geared towards children in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Classes are running for 2 weeks at a time with the ephasis on learning rowing basics and making fitness fun. All classes are in our 10 seat indoor rowing tank. Young athletes will Improve stregth, fitness and flexibility all while learning to enjoy the sport of rowing.
Development 2 is geared towards middle school and beginner/recreational high school athletes. The program is organized by season: Fall Season runs September through late October; Winter Training runs from late October through to mid-March; Spring Season begins in March and runs through early June; Summer Season runs from June through August. A pre-season week is also available the last week in August in preparation for the Fall season.
Rowers in the Development 2 program start out rowing in a 12-person sweep boat, which allows for up to 12 rowers to practice at a time, with a coach on-board to provide hands-on instruction. Athletes then learn the basics of sweep rowing and sculling, developing their skills and working together as a team.
In addition to on-water rowing technique, rowers are taught boat handling, safety on the water, as well as indoor rowing technique on the ergometer (aka, rowing machine.) Maritime Rowing Club’s Junior Programs are designed to help athletes improve in all aspects: fitness, strength, flexibility, mental toughness, discipline, etc. Our junior programs are tailored to fit elementary school athletes all the way up to international level high school athletes.
